Key Stage 1
Autumn Term 2007
Year 1
Our topics
Our work this term will be based
around two topics: ‘Ourselves’ and ‘Toys’. The children’s work and
play will be based around these themes and we will be developing much
of their learning through role-play.
Literacy
This term Year 1 will be focusing on
a range of texts including fiction and poetry, stories with familiar
settings and rhymes.
Year One children will also look at
labels, lists and captions and will learn how to structure a simple
sentence and develop their writing skills. We will use phonic skills
to help with reading and writing and will practise joined-up
handwriting script.
Numeracy
Numeracy work is focused on key
objectives for each year group: the Numeracy target book will give you
more detailed information as well as some ideas on how to support your
child. We will be emphasising work on number bonds to 10 and 20 and
mental arithmetic.
Science
Our topics in Science for this term
are ‘Ourselves’ and ‘Sound and hearing’. We will be looking at
identifying different parts of the body, learning about our senses and
about how humans and other animals move and grow. We will also learn
to relate sound to hearing and look at how sound travels from a
source.
ICT
During our ICT sessions Y1 will be
looking at modelling—using the computer to do ‘real life’ things eg.
dressing teddy—and learning to develop our knowledge of computer parts
and to improve our mouse skills. We will also use ICT to support our
work in other subjects for example, using the ‘Dazzle’ program in Art.
Religious
Education
In Our R.E. work this term we will
look at God and creation, and related Christian Bible stories. We
will also learn about creation stories in other faiths. Towards
Christmas time we will learn about Christmas gifts and gift-bringers.
History
In History, later in the term, we
will look at how our toys are different from those in the past, and
start to think about changes in our own lives and other people in our
family. There will be lots of opportunities for developing speaking
and listening skills.
Geography
Our Geography topic this term will be
‘Around our school’ and the children will be introduced to the idea of
looking at their local area. We will look at our school and the area
immediately around it, and will visit some of the local shops.
Art
In our Art lessons our topic will be
‘Self-portrait’. We will talk about images of children in portraits,
paintings and photographs to help develop ideas about how they can
portray themselves. We will also use some of our Art lessons to do
still life work and to complete Christmas Art activities so that we
can decorate the school for the Christmas Fair and for our parties.
Music
The class will be exploring sound and
duration. We will listen to, and make sounds expressively, and use
them in singing and stories. We will learn to hear long and short
sounds and use them in compositions.
Design
Technology
Our D.T. topic for the term will be
‘Moving pictures’. We will design and make moving pictures from
everyday products using simple levers and sliders, which will be based
on characters from stories and which we can use in storytelling
activities.
P.E.
In our Physical Education lessons we
will be taught a variety of games to improve and apply the basic
skills that we have already learnt. We will learn how to use space to
avoid opponents and how to score points.
We will also be doing lots of
gymnastic activities involving travelling and balancing and creating
short sequences of actions.
Year 2
Literacy
This term Year 2 class will be focussing on a range
of texts including poems, stories with familiar settings and
instructions.
We will also be looking at spelling words with ‘ow’,
‘ox’ and ‘ar’ in and words that end in ‘s’, ‘ed’ and ‘ing’. Other
literacy work will look at the use of commas, exclamation marks and
the use of capital letters.
Numeracy
Numeracy work is focussed on key objectives for
each year group. The Numeracy target book should give you some ideas
of how to support your child. This class will be emphasising place
value, ordering and estimating, mental addition and subtraction,
simple multiplication and division, recognising coins and totals,
measuring in cm and m and simple weight and capacity work.
Science
Our topics in
Science for this term are ‘Health and Growth’ and ‘Materials’. We will
be looking at food groups and how to eat for health as well as
exploring human needs and growth. We will be looking at how to group
materials according to their properties and how we can change
materials by heating and cooling them.
ICT
During our ICT sessions we will be looking at
‘Entering Text’ and ‘Creating line drawings and using shape and
colours’.
In addition to this we will use ICT to support our
work in other subjects for example, using the ‘Dazzle’ program in Art.
Religious
Education
In Our R.E. work this term we will look at
‘Harvest’, ’Christmas, Good News and News bringers’ and ‘Helping
Others’ We will also be retelling the Christmas Story and using our
drama and presentation skills to practice a performance for the
Christmas celebrations in church.
History
Our history topic will look at the lives of
Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. These two ladies helped
establish modern day nursing. As Christmas approaches we will explore
some of our Christmas traditions.
Geography
In Geography lessons this term we will be exploring
an island home and comparing it to our own home town Crosby. Katie
Morag and her adventures on the island of Struay will help us learn
about this type of environment.
Art
In our Art lessons our topic will be ‘Picture
This!’ We will be using visual experiences and our imagination to
develop ideas. We will also use some of our Art lessons to complete
Christmas Art activities so that we can decorate the school for the
Christmas Fair and for our parties.
Music
This term Year2D class’ topics in Music will be
‘The long and short of it’ looking at the duration of notes and ‘Feel
the pulse’ focussing on pulse, beat and rhythm.

Vehicles’. We will be investigating how simple mechanisms relating to
moving vehicles work and we will be designing and making a wheeled
vehicle.
P.E.
In our Physical Education lessons we will develop
our physical skills in both Gym and Games activities. Work in P.E will
be linked to our science study about Health and Growth as we learn how
exercise keeps us healthy.
