Key Stage 1
Autumn Term 2007
Year 3
Literacy
This term Year Three will be focussing on a range
of texts including stories with familiar settings, poetry and
playscripts. We will also look at information books and reports. We
will also look at writing in sentences, using punctuation (question
marks, exclamation marks and speech marks), and we will be starting to
use paragraphs.
Numeracy
Numeracy work is focussed on key objectives for
each year group. The Numeracy target book should give you some ideas
of how to support your child. This class will be emphasising work on
place value, ordering and rounding, estimating, money and real life
problems and mental calculation strategies
Science
Our topics in Science for this term are ‘Materials’
and ‘Magnets and Springs’. Our investigation work will involve
identifying characteristics, properties and uses of materials, testing
materials, forces involved in magnetic fields and testing springs.
ICT
During our ICT sessions Year Three will be learning
word processing skills—changing and re-sizing fonts, as well as
combining text and graphics. We will also be using music software to
re-order sounds and refine a musical composition. We will use ICT to
support our work in other subjects.
Religious
Education
In Our R.E. work this term we will look at ‘Old
Testament Characters who were called by God’ including Moses, Samuel,
Jonah and David. We will also be retelling the Christmas Story and
using our drama and presentation skills to practice a performance for
the Christmas celebrations in church.
History
Our history topic for the term will be ‘The Second
World War’. We will be looking in particular at what life was like for
children during the war, their school life, work and pastimes.
Geography
During the Geography lessons in Year Three this
term we will be Investigating our local area. We will be looking in
particular at Jobs, Tourism, Pastimes and Leisure Activities.
Art
In our Art lessons our topic will be pictures that
portray relationships and the work of Clarice Cliff and clay
sculpture. We will also use some of our Art lessons to complete
Christmas Art activities so that we can decorate the school for the
Christmas Fair and for our parties.
Music
This term Year Three’s Music will focus on using
sounds. We will be using music expressively and descriptively and also
exploring rhythmic patterns.
Design
Technology
Our D.T. work for the term will be concentrated on
learning about packaging. We will design and make packaging from
‘nets’ and will investigate the use of different fonts and graphics.
P.E.
In our Physical Education lessons we will be taught
a variety of games to improve and apply the basic skills that we have
already learnt. We will learn the basic skills and rules involved in
the game of Hockey and other passing games as well as gymnastics and
dance.
Year 4
Literacy
This term Year Four will be focussing on a range of
Fiction and Non-Fiction texts. This will include stories with an
historical setting, poetry based on personal experiences, playscripts,
newspaper reports, instructional texts and non-chronological reports.
Numeracy
Numeracy work is focussed on key objectives for
each year group. The Numeracy work for this term focuses on place
value, ordering, rounding, mental calculation strategies for addition
and subtraction and money problems. We will also be looking at shape
and space.
Science
Our topics in Science for this term are ‘Moving and
Growing’ and ‘Circuits and Conductors’.
The children will learn about the function of the
skeleton as well as the role of muscles.
They will learn scientific vocabulary for some
parts of their bodies.
ICT
During our ICT sessions Year Four will be
developing and applying their word processing skills to support and
present work in other subjects. They will also be using graphics
packages to develop images using repeated patterns.
Religious
Education
In Our R.E. work this term we will look at ‘David
and the Psalms’ and we will also go on to think
about the Christmas story.
History
Our history topic for the term will be ‘The
Victorians’. We will be looking in particular
at what life was like for children during Victorian
Times.
Geography
During the Geography lessons in Year Four this term
our topic will be “Connecting Ourselves to the World .” Uses of faxes
and e-mail , weather around the World and Travel including planning
a holiday.
Art
In our Art lessons our topic will be ‘Viewpoints’.
We will be looking at Victorian Artists and the techniques they used.
We will also use some of our Art lessons to complete Christmas Art
activities so that we can decorate the school for the Christmas Fair
and for our parties.
Music
This term Year Four’s Music topic is called ‘Play
it Again’. We will be learning about repeated rhythmic patterns and
how rhythms can be described through symbols.
Design
Technology
Our D.T. work for the term will be concentrated on
learning about hinges. We will be use basic cutting tools to look at
different joining techniques and we will design and make storybooks
and picture frames.
P.E.
In our Physical Education lessons we will be taught
a variety of games to improve and apply the basic skills that we have
already learnt. We will learn the basic skills and rules involved in
the game of Netball, Gymnastic skills and dance routines.
Year 5
Literacy
This term Year Five will be focussing on a range of
texts including narrative structure, plays and poetry. We will also
look at note taking and instructions.
We will spend time focusing on complex sentences,
subordinate clauses, connectives, word derivations and independent
spelling activities.
Numeracy
Numeracy work is focussed on key objectives for
each year group. The Numeracy target book should give you some ideas
of how to support your child. This class will be emphasising work in
all the areas detailed in your Maths target booklets.
Science
Our topics in Science for this term are ‘Gases
Around Us’ and ‘Changing Sounds’. Our investigation work will involve
making and repeating observations and we will also be relating our
conclusions to scientific knowledge and understanding.
ICT
During our ICT sessions Year Five will be looking
at ‘Manipulating Shapes’, ‘Creating Plans’ and ‘Searching databases’.
In addition to this we will use ICT to support our work in other
subjects, for example we will use the interactive programs on the
Smart board for Literacy, Numeracy and Geography.
Religious
Education
In Our R.E. work this term we will look at ‘The
Bible as a sacred book’ and the gospels of Matthew and Luke. We will
also be retelling the Christmas Story and using our drama and
presentation skills to practice a performance for the Christmas
celebrations in church.
History
Our history topic for the term will be ‘The
Tudors’. We will be looking in particular at finding out why Henry
VIII had six wives!
Geography
During the Geography lessons in Year Five this term
we will be studying Water. We will be looking closely at water around
the world, in school and at home and how we use it
Art
In our Art lessons our topics will be ‘The Art of
Kandinsky and Matisse’ and ‘Making Containers’. We will also use some
of our Art lessons to complete Christmas Art activities so that we can
decorate the school for the Christmas Fair and for our parties.
Music
This term Year Five’s Music will about ‘Cyclic
Patterns and Rounds’. We will be using our voices and a range of
instruments to investigate this topic.
Design
Technology
Our D.T. work for the term will be to design and
make a working musical instrument for a particular purpose. We will be
investigating a range of instruments and experimenting with ways of
making sounds.
P.E.
In our Physical Education lessons we will be taught
a variety of games to improve and apply the basic skills that we have
already learnt. We will learn the basic skills involved in the game of
Hockey, Gymnastic skills, Swimming and dance routines.
Year 6
Literacy
This term Year Six will be looking at Shakespeare’s
plays and poems. We will be writing excerpts in a modern style, acting
out scenes and taking a close look at the language he used. We will
also be researching and writing biographies and writing our
autobiographies.
Numeracy
The numeracy target book you will receive should
give you some ideas of how to support your child. It is important to
practise multiplication tables as these are part of many of our
lessons.
Science
Our Science will include work on ‘micro organisms’,
looking at how bacteria can be both harmful and beneficial to our
lives. We will also be studying plants and animals, in particular how
they are adapted to their environment. We will use classification
keys, write food chains and learn how plants make their own food.
ICT
During our I.C.T. sessions Year Six will be looking
at ‘Multimedia and Powerpoint’. In addition to this we will use I.C.T.
to support our work in other subjects, for example we will use
Microsoft Word during literacy and to present work done in other
lessons.
Religious
Education
“Journeys and Pilgrimages” is our R.E. topic. We
will discuss our own and Jesus’ life journey and learn the story of “A
Pilgrim’s Progress”. We will also look at famous pilgrimage sites
around the world and discuss why people of various religions see
pilgrimage as important.
History
Our topic for the term will be ‘Ancient Egypt’. We
will see what we can find out about the period from what has
survived. Our homework will include a project on a
pharaoh.
Geography
During our geography lessons we will be studying
rivers. We will be looking at the features of rivers, the life around
a major world river ( The Nile) and river uses today.
Art
We will be designing a miniature stage set inside a
shoebox based upon our knowledge of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. We
will look at costume design and how this enhances the audience’s
understanding of the characters which will link in with our visit to
the Liverpool Empire Theatre in November to see “Cats”!
Music
This term, Year Six music will focus on singing and
playing rounds including traditional music from other parts of the
world.
Design
Technology
Our D.T. work for the term will be to observe,
draw, design and make different types of shelters. We will also be
designing and making stockings for the Christmas tree.
P.E.
We will be taking part in a variety of games to
improve and apply the basic skills that we have already learned. We
will be playing tag rugby, improving our gymnastic skills, practising
our swimming (Wednesdays this half-term) and learning dance routines.
Our second P.E. lesson of the week is on Thursday.
